School Lunch with my Little Peoples

It's been a long time since I enjoyed school lunch.  In fact, I rarely ate the institutional stuff when I was in school.  To me it was a luxury the other kids enjoyed.   But every now and then I got to indulge in a plate of food from the lunchroom, and I could never figure out why my friends complained so much about having to eat it.  Most of the time my lunch was either something gulped down at home because most of the lunch period was spent walking to and from there (but it was still the best, coming hot from the stove top made by Mom's loving hands).  But other times I brought a sandwich or something in a brown bag.  Too many times I just skipped lunch.  I blame that for me being overweight today.  Little bodies need lunch.

Tuesday, I got a chance to go back to school lunch with a couple of my adorable grandchildren:  Jack and Maddy.  Their school was hosting a Grandparent's Day in the lunch room, and they got their Price grandparents and their Loveridge grandmother to share their lunch:

Jack may have not been too thrilled to have his grandma Loveridge with him.  I went to sit down on the bench and could not get this fat body into the very tiny space.  Suddenly I found myself falling backwards, right down to the floor!   Fortunately, no pain, no broken bones, just a lot of embarrassment on my part and I'm afraid on his part, too.  I mean, how many kids get to have their grandma's come to school and make a fool of themselves right in front of all their playmates?  But he was a good sport.  Later he told his Mom it was ok - I had laughed about it and he thought that was a good way to handle it.  He's so sweet.

All his friends had already left to go to recess, and he waited with us.  However, as soon as Maddy showed up he was out of there so fast our heads spun!

Um, yeah it was the same day as elections.  Forgot about that crazy sticker.

It was a fun way to spend lunch.  Thanks for inviting me.  Wish I could do that with all the grandkids.  We were in Mont Tremblant and missed Kamryn and Karsyn's special grandparent days.  And we have always missed the ones in Baltimore.  How I wish they lived closer!

I do have to say this - school lunch today is different than I remember it.  These kids have a fruit and salad bar along with their lunch - nobody serving it, they just take what they want.  They get a choice of milks (skim, 1%, or chocolate).  They get to pick out their own food and actually have a choice of entrees.  Yet, with all that, there still was a lot of food just being dumped, which is so sad.

I have a hard time wanting to buy school lunch for that waste! Jack is so busy he rarely eats his lunch because he wants to go out to recess at least if he brings home lunch he usually eventually eats it!

Thanks so much for coming. At the end of the day Jack was so happy to say he had 3 visitors for lunch! Thanks for coming and making their day and for the books. We are so lucky to live close to our grandparents!

Grandparents Day was my favorite thing about Elementary School. I loved showing off my grandparents and I am sure Jack loved having you there even if you took a tumble. Cute, cute pictures!
