Black and White

Norma (Mom), Colleen, Marie (Grandma Heaps)
There was a time when life was black and white.
 Norma, Marie, Colleen
It was easy then, to know wrong from right.
Norma (standing on head - wee!)
See, if it's wrong it's wrong and we shouldn't oughta do it
Lois, Colleen, Norma
But if it's right, then it is right, and we oughta get right to it.
Norma

What happened along the way?
When someone introduced the color gray?
Norma and Leland - wedding photograph 1949
That between white and black there were hundreds of shades at play?

Well, through it all I had a mother who still knew
That black was black and white was white
And to her standards she'd always be true.

Leland Jr., Ron, Arnie, Me, Norma 1952
And that's what she taught us, her children in time,
She taught us: stand tall and always toe the line,
She taught us,
She taught,
And then sent us on our way,
And because of her love and her teachings,
I am what I am today.

I have a few posts that need to be posted still - there was Jack's birthday, and Tonya and Brian's graduation - I'll get to them.  But today I wanted to take a minute and just say Happy Mother's Day everyone. And especially to pay tribute to my dear mother.  I'm not sure why that dorky poem popped into my head - but truth is, my Mother has always stood firm on her standards.  She taught us well.  We weren't perfect children, aren't perfect adults, but it isn't because of how we were taught.

I am so very grateful for you Mom.  For who you are and what you stand for, and your love and caring that never ends.  Happy Mother's Day, and thank you for everything.

Happy Mother's Day! Your mom is adorable, and that family picture of everyone gathered around in the living room looks like a 1950's sitcom. So cute! I think I should have lived in those beautiful black and white times.
