Day 12 - Holy Ghost

Day 12   (April 19, 2011)
      Question:  How can the Holy Ghost help me to be more like Christ?

      Read:
      3 Nephi 27:20       “ Now this is the commandment: Repent, all ye ends of the earth, and come unto me and be baptized in my name, that ye may be sanctified by the reception of the Holy Ghost, that ye may stand spotless before me at the last day.”

      D&C 11:12           And now, verily, verily, I say unto thee, put your trust in that Spirit which leadeth to do good—yea, to do justly, to walk humbly, to judge righteously; and this is my Spirit.”

D&C 46:11-26
      11        “For all have not every gift given unto them; for there are many gifts, and to every man is given a gift by the Spirit of God.
      12        “To some is given one, and to some is given another, that all may be profited thereby.
      13        “To some it is given by the Holy Ghost to know that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and that he was crucified for the sins of the world.
      14        “To others it is given to believe on their words, that they also might have eternal life if they continue faithful.
       15       “And again, to some it is given by the Holy Ghost to know the differences of administration, as it will be pleasing unto the same Lord, according as the Lord will, suiting his mercies according to the conditions of the children of men.
      16        “And again, it is given by the Holy Ghost to some to know the diversities of operations, whether they be of God, that the manifestations of the Spirit may be given to every man to profit withal.
      17        “And again, verily I say unto you, to some is given, by the Spirit of God, the word of wisdom.
      18        “To another is given the word of knowledge, that all may be taught to be wise and to have knowledge.
      19        “And again, to some it is given to have faith to be healed;
      20        “And to others it is given to have faith to heal.
      21        “And again, to some is given the working of miracles;
      22        “And to others it is given to prophesy;
      23        “And to others the discerning of spirits.
      24        “And again, it is given to some to speak with tongues;
      25        “And to another is given the interpretation of tongues.
      26        “And all these gifts come from God, for the benefit of the children of God.”

Moroni 10:4          And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.”

D&C 121:45-46
      45        “Let thy bowels also be full of charity towards all men, and to the household of faith, and let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly; then shall thy confidence wax strong in the presence of God; and the doctrine of the priesthood shall distil upon thy soul as the dews from heaven.
      46        “The Holy Ghost shall be thy constant companion, and thy scepter an unchanging scepter of righteousness and truth; and thy dominion shall be an everlasting dominion, and without compulsory means it shall flow unto thee forever and ever.”

John 14:16-17, 26
      16        “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
      17        “Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
      26        “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”

      Ponder:
      Why is it important we have truth?
      Truth is the one thing that keeps this mortal existence from dissolving into chaos.  The question itself could lead to some very deep philosophical discussions about truth being relative and one’s truth being another’s lie.  But those are all traps Satan would rejoice to have us fall into.  We know what truth is.  We know what brings joy to our personal lives. We know what brings us feelings of satisfaction and peace.  Reality is governed by truth.  The entire universe functions by truth.  And we can know deep inside when something is true or not.  That truth keeps our paths going ever forward to the Lord.

      How can I have the Holy Ghost as my constant companion?  We have been given the gift of the Holy Ghost when we were baptized.  But we have to live worthy lives in order to continue having the Holy Ghost as our constant companion.  I cannot imagine life without the Holy Ghost.  He is my inner compass, ever present, ever counseling, ever teaching.  When I make poor choices and choose to participate in things that are not good for me, I feel the loss of that companionship.  Certainly striving to keep the commandments and following the promptings of the Holy Ghost are the keys to having the Holy Ghost as our constant companion.
