Day 23: gotta have ....

30 Day Challenge, Day 23:
Something you crave for a lot

It's white.
It starts as microscopic crystals
but can grow to big cubes that glisten like jewels in the sun.
It makes my tongue happy.
I could consume it by the tablespoon, just straight.
But I prefer it mixed with all kinds of other ingredients.
A spoonful of it makes the medicine go down, in a most delightful way.
On the other side,  it makes my blood unhappy.
It plumps up my fat cells with extra stored energy.
It makes me want more, and more, and more....
It can be very addictive
to me
because I crave it.
I crave it.
I crave it.
Especially on holidays, BIG holidays,
like Easter, Halloween, and Christmas,
and TODAY:
VALENTINE'S DAY.....

When you just gotta have a sugar cookie cut in a heart shape and decorated ...

Here's my favorite sugar cookie recipe.  It's an heirloom recipe, handed down through Brent's mother.  The touch of nutmeg gives them just a hint of eggnog flavor. These are crispy until frosted, but after they are frosted, if stored in an airtight container, they soften right up and taste absolutely delicious. And it is good that I don't have an oven today, because if I did I would make a big batch to take out to everyone and it would still leave me with half the cookies to consume all by myself.

Did I say my blood isn't happy with sugar right now?   Sigh.

SUGAR COOKIES
1/2 cup butter or shortening
1 cup sugar
1 egg
2 1/4 cup flour
1/2 tsp salt
2 Tbl milk (more if needed)
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp vanilla
2 tsp baking powder

Cream butter, sugar, and egg  (I actually prefer these made with the shortening - they seem softer).  Mix and sift the dry ingredients and add alternately with enough milk to make the dough softly firm for easy rolling.  Roll about 1/8 - 1/4" thick.  Cut with cookie cutters, and bake at 350 degrees until cookies are firm but still light in color, about eight minutes - but watch your first batch to get an idea of how long to leave them in your own oven.  Be careful not to overcook.  Once they start to tan I'm afraid it's too late to rescue them.   Frost when cool and store in an airtight container.
Very best when eaten with a tall glass of cold milk!

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY EVERYONE!

I also love sugar cookies, and while I was going to skip them, now I really want one. I will have to test your recipe, for research purposes of course. Happy Valentines Day!

Thanks to Tonya, I actually made some today, too. It was fun sharing her kitchen. I wonder how many points are in one standard heart shaped cookies.... I've already had three. Oops.

I have it on good authority that anything consumed on Feb. 14 has NO calories, NO sugar, and NO fat. So enjoy. But beware--at midnight they morph into calories, sugar and fat-tilled delights.
